Why I Stopped Training The HORSE STANCE & Answering Common Questions
THE HORSE STANCE an excellent exercise for developing strength, endurance, the mind and more but...why did I stop training it? In this video, I will answer this question as well as answer some common questions such as, "I can't get deep enough, what can I do?", "Why don't you point your feet forward?" and "why not anterior pelvic tilt?".

Soft Acrobatics Improvisation | Live Within the Mistakes

2 Minutes of Improvisation using many different soft acrobatic elements. On social media, we often see more of a 'Highlight Reel'. The highlight reel is not the reality of the practice. I also want to show the real practice which is 'The Reel of Mistakes'. Throughout this improvisation set, there are many mistakes. Some may be able to see them and others not but the reality is many are present....
Why I Practice Everywhere

After you develop a consistent practice, one of the many difficulties we run into is staying within our comfort zone. This could be the specific place we practice, the people around us, the environment, etc. If we stay in this comfort place forever, you will find when something disturbs your practice ( and many things will! ), it will be very difficult to continue. So, I make it a point to prac...

      We could say the same about many practices and exercises across multitudes of disciplines. It starts to hint that it is not so much in what we do but how we do it.

    it's ok to zone out and let your mind wander. it's a form of rest and sleep for the brain which is important for learning. we need activity cycles and rest cycles. and yes i found the idea of "practice" to be synonymous with "pattern", "lifestyle", "way of life", "habits" etc. it occurred to me that, the practice of being a Buddhist monk is different from a Shaolin monk. One sits all day, the other moves all day. Or even the idea of archetypes and career paths. A dancer spends most of his time dancing, a computer programmer spends most of his time sitting down writing code.

    • @TheTaoWay
      @TheTaoWay 10 днів тому

      Allowing your mind to wander because you choose to do so at the right time is not an issue. What becomes an issue is when you zone out and wander when you should be paying attention and feeling (talking to loved ones, practicing, etc.). You zone out without choosing. It is the 'easy' and comfortable option. This is what we should be observing and working on.

    Okay, but if you were doing kung fu for combat readiness, and thought there is a risk you might get attacked tomorrow and have to fight someone, and could die, I presume you would continue doing horse stance to some extent. It is the relative safety of modern life that let you give up I would assume? Burn out is something all sports training experiences. Maybe if you toned down the frequency to something you could be happy with you might have continued? It's a bit like a free, no equipment leg press, that also develops ligaments and relaxes the leg meat, and also as you say, forces you to develop meditative qualities

    • @TheTaoWay
      @TheTaoWay Місяць тому

      The horse stance is a great exercise but it is important we don't give it too much credit where it is not due. If you want to get better at fighting then you must fight. Holding the horse stance will not help you here. If you're main concern is being attacked then I would pursue a martial art with regular real sparring such as Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, etc.

    • @maximisatwat
      @maximisatwat Місяць тому

      @@TheTaoWay horse stance is like an ancient no-equipment leg-press. Your legs will build up very strong muscle for kicks, as well as acting as a stable base for hand strikes, as well as the meditative aspect you mentioned. You will not find a simpler way to build very strong legs with little risk of injury because there's no impact.

    • @TheTaoWay
      @TheTaoWay Місяць тому

      My objection is not to the physical and mental benefits. I have a number of videos talking about these. My objection is to its connection to fighting. Having a good horse stance does not mean you can fight or defend yourself. If you want to be able to fight, you must spar and you must spar often.

    My long fist and Chen style taiji teacher said horse stance was for children. He would teach it to adults but wasn't in favor of holding for long. The older the person, the less he would emphasize it. He gave 2 reasons: 1. footwork should take priority over stances because in fighting, positioning is everything, 2. the older you are, the more you need TO MOVE! If someone had 10:00 to train, the last thing he wanted them doing was horse stance when they could do a 1:00 long form ten times.

    Great perspective :) I'm gradually learning, started with martial arts which remains a constant, then went into locomotion and that kind of stuff last year and this year I've been very fascinated with parkour, in a flowy creative expression/interaction with the city and nature... but it's all very much imperfect... and I'm happy to play with it and do "cool stuff" as well as "embarrassing mistakes" in front of kids in the school yard or at the club (I work as a teacher/pedagouge).... the mistakes shows that the skills I have attained are attainable and that it's okay to fail, and just have fun developing a skillset... there's too much perfectionism in our culture. :) By the way, without the voiceover I wouldn't notice the mistakes here, cuz they're subtle and only you know the intented pace/angle/etc of the moves you're doing.... so it's a good insight as well into the mistakes that aren't visible from an outsider's perspective :)

    Great video update, I have been doing the Horse Stance every morning for 10 mins for now 20+ days. I can't yet do it all at once, so I do it in long mins chunks. The goal is to be able to do it in 5 minutes and then 10mins chunks and go further. There are already a ton of benefits gained, but my overall aim with this exercise is on the mental side of things, although from a fitness perspective, it's a fantastic exercise that I have started to recommend to a lot to people. One can search more about extreme isometrics and how good these exercises are for tendon health, neural drive, lactic acid threshold, cardio, mobility etc. But if the goal is mental dev, then horse stance will be a staple in my daily routine for years to come. Once I can hold the position for 10 mins I will make a video and link it here.

    3:38 i've been doing a stretching/quasi-yoga routine for a while now, with the goals of getting rid of my anterior pelvic tilt (it occurs while standing) and achieving the front and side splits. my understanding is that an anterior pelvic tilt occurs due to some biomechanical misalignment, muscle weakness, and/or lack of flexibility in some area. when i practice a bodyweight squat, sometimes i do a slight spinal wave while i'm at the bottom of my squat range, so that my chest is slightly out while my pelvis simultaneously goes from neutral to posterior - so my chest and pelvis are basically opposing each other, going in opposite directions - i feel that helps with lengthening my spine and making it more elastic. i'm not formally schooled in any movement practice but this is just an observation from my own explorations on a yoga mat

      It is important to say that I am talking about the ability to choose posterior or anterior pelvic tilt and not being forced to do one or the other due to a weakness/imbalance in the body. You are talking about the condition of anterior pelvic tilt where I am talking about this ability to choose. There are certain exercises that you would want a very prominent anterior pelvic tilt and others where you want a very strong posterior pelvic tilt and different intensities in between. It also depends upon your own body and the qualities you are looking to develop.

    • @bernardlim8442
      @bernardlim8442 Місяць тому

      Usually martial art practitioners use a posterior pelvic tilt for smoother qi circulation and to store qi in the dantian.
